Make a Disaster Plan for Yourself, Family and Friends

3/21/2019 (Permalink)

Disasters don’t plan ahead. You Can. This week we are focusing on making a plan for yourself, family and your friends.

Make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area.  Preparing the family for an emergency is as simple as a conversation over dinner. Here are some ideas from SERVPRO of Saginaw to get you started:

  • Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated.
  • Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.
  • Download a group texting app so your entire family can keep in touch before, during & after an emergency.
  • Practice evacuating in the car with your animals, so they’re more comfortable if you need to evacuate in an emergency.
  • Consider downloading the Fema app with weather alerts for up to 5 locations: fema.gov/mobile-app
  • Sign up for local emergency alerts in your area by searching online.

Keeping yourself, family and your friends safe is your first priority when disaster strikes. Be sure you have plan in place before disaster strikes. For more information on creating and implementing a Disaster Plan visit Ready.gov.

Water damage can strike your commercial property at any time. Water damage can sideline your business, regardless if the damage occurs from a major storm event or a broken water line. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. So when you have an emergency water event, we offer fast, 24 hour emergency services, 365 days per year.

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have the training, experience, and equipment to manage water and flooding damage. Whether you have a large water emergency or a small water damage event, they will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to its completion.

After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety:

  • Is it safe to stay in the house?
  • Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
  • Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

What To Do After Flooding

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Is your Home Prepared for Storm Damage?

6/20/2018 (Permalink)

Severe Weather Ready

There is a time of the year when tornadoes are more prominent than others. That time is often during the spring and summer, possibly in the fall as well. Many people don't have a plan for severe weather that includes tornadoes. With a little careful planning, your family can have an increased chance of staying safe during a storm.

Make A Plan For The Family
Although you need to create a plan, there is something more important that you need to do with your family. You need to practice your plan so that everyone knows where to go no matter what time of the day or night severe weather strikes. Write down all of the important phone numbers of family and friends so that you can stay in contact with them after the storm to ensure that they are safe. Another important number to have is your insurance adjuster. This number is beneficial if there is damage to the home. Companies like SERVPRO can come to the home to help with water removal and other storm damage that occurs inside the house.

Keep copies of all of your important documents, such as social security cards and birth certificates. You also need to have a way to communicate with others in the event there is no power or phone service. If there is a large group of people in the disaster area, each person needs to know how to contact others. Designate a leader and an assistant to check with others in the area to make sure everyone is accounted for after the storm.

An emergency preparedness kit is something to have so that your family can survive if there is no power or if the family is stuck in the home because of damages from the storm. Items in the kit should last for about 72 hours. Batteries are essential so that you can use your phone, radio or a battery-powered television. You also need flashlights, a gallon of water for each person for at least three days and non-perishable foods. Other items that you might want to include in your kit are blankets, powdered formula for babies, a first aid kit, and clothing. It's also a good idea to have a spare cell phone charger.

Before a storm arrives, if possible, secure items that might blow away. These include chairs and toys that are in the yard. When you are prepared for a natural disaster and the storm damage that could take place, it can help give your family a peace of mind so that they can focus on remaining safe and together.

Getting prepared for storms

Now is the time to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws our way. An Emergency Supply Kit is a good place to begin.

An Emergency Supply Kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours.

Recommended Items to Include in an Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather
Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Phone charges with adapters to allow charging in an automobile

If you suffer storm damage to your home or property, we can be there to take immediate action. We can help minimize secondary damages caused by severe storms.
